- HyperRez: Speed <sum08 1 7>
- ================
-
- One common first impression of HyperRez is its speed, especially when
- running the program on a hard disk. Here's why HyperRez is fast:
-
- (1) Files are ASCII -- HyperRez uses ASCII files <link16> that load
- much faster than graphic files of competitors.
-
- (2) Files are small -- While HyperRez can load ASCII files up to 20K,
- most files are single screen (average size 2k).
-
- (3) Total file load -- HyperRez loads the entire ASCII file into a
- buffer so page jumps <link06> are instantaneous.
-
- (4) Perceived speed -- Software quality is often measured by the speed
- of screen updates. If command response is
- greater than 1/10 of a second, the mind
- wanders, hampering users <link34 1 22>.
-
- (5) Browsing effort -- Browsing uses experimental exploration as a
- primary method of search. As a mental process,
- browsing only works if the hypertext jumps are
- intuitive and instantaneous <link32 2 10>.
