  4.         One common first impression of HyperRez is its speed, especially when
  5.         running the program on a hard disk.  Here's why HyperRez is fast:
  6.  
  7.         (1)  Files are ASCII -- HyperRez uses ASCII files <link16> that load
  8.                                 much faster than graphic files of competitors.
  9.  
  10.         (2)  Files are small -- While HyperRez can load ASCII files up to 20K,
  11.                                 most files are single screen (average size 2k).
  12.  
  13.         (3)  Total file load -- HyperRez loads the entire ASCII file into a
  14.                                 buffer so page jumps <link06> are instantaneous.

  16.         (4)  Perceived speed -- Software quality is often measured by the speed
  17.                                 of screen updates.  If command response is
  18.                                 greater than 1/10 of a second, the mind
  19.                                 wanders, hampering users  <link34 1 22>.

  21.         (5)  Browsing effort -- Browsing uses experimental exploration as a
  22.                                 primary method of search.  As a mental process,
  23.                                 browsing only works if the hypertext jumps are
  24.                                 intuitive and instantaneous <link32 2 10>.
